Coating, composite molding or mastic composition (C1) includes surface-modified cellulose microfibrils that have a length/diameter ratio above 20 and an average diameter of 1-50 nm and are physically modified with an amphiphilic compound or chemically modified with a compound having a hydrophobic part and a group that can react with surface functions of the microfibrils. Coating, composite molding or mastic composition (C1) comprises (by weight) 100 parts organic binder, 0.001-20 parts surface-modified cellulose microfibrils, optionally an organic diluent and optionally up to 300 parts fillers, fibers, pigments, dyes and other additives. The microfibrils have a length/diameter ratio above 20 and an average diameter of 1-50 nm and are physically modified with an amphiphilic compound or chemically modified with a compound having a hydrophobic part and a group that can react with surface functions of the microfibrils. Independent claims are also included for: (1) producing C1 by a process comprising at least one step of mixing an additive with a binder and/or an organic diluent; (2) intermediate composition for preparing C1, comprising the surface-modified cellulose microfibrils (5-50 wt.%) and an organic binder and/or organic diluent.
