Reducing the concentration of infectious prion protein (I) in organic material (A), as liquid, particles or fibers, that is (suspected of being) contaminated by (I), comprises: (a) treating (A) with at least one bacterium that secretes one or more hydrolytic (including proteolytic) enzymes (E) active against (I) and (b) incubating for long enough to produce the required reduction in (I) content. An independent claim is also included for a cleaning composition that reduces the concentration of (I) comprising at least one of the specified bacteria and a support.
