The system consists of a suction circuit (2) drawing water through a series of orifices (4) in the bottom of the tank (1) or adjacent to it. The water is drawn through a particle bed (12) of a porous material such as pouzzolane that covers (4) and contains micro-organisms such as nitrite and nitrate reducing bacteria that provide biological treatment of the water as it is recycled by a pump (5) between (2) and a return pipe.
