The composition of the invention is based on oxides of zirconium and yttrium and has a specific surface area of at least 12 m 2 / g after calcination at 1000 ° C for 10 hours. This composition is obtained by a process in which a mixture of the zirconium and yttrium compounds is precipitated with a base; the medium obtained which contains a precipitate is heated; and then added to this precipitate a compound chosen from anionic surfactants, nonionic surfactants, polyethylene glycols, carboxylic acids and their salts and surfactants of the ethoxylates type of carboxymethylated fatty alcohols and the precipitate is finally calcined.The composition can be used as a catalyst.
