An imaging system comprises a camera system (10) for generating camera data comprising position data and image data derived from a real scene, at least one camera (11, 12) having position measuring means (11A) for generating said position data defining a 3-D position for each of a set of elements of the real scene and imaging means (11B) for generating said image data associated with each element, and for generating the camera data over a period of time such that at least a portion of the camera data is representative of motion in the real scene. A model generator (36) processes the camera data (38) to obtain model data representative of a time varying virtual scene for use in rendering an image of a selectable view of the virtual scene and stores the model data in a storage medium (37). The cameras may be scanning laser cameras which acquire both colour image data and range data from reflected radiation.
