A method of transmitting packet data on a network, the method comprising determining a maximum segment size (MSS) required by a user for a message to be transmitted; informing a server of the MSS during call set-up; determining a maximum transmission unit (MTU) size required for the message; comparing (25) the required MTU with an MTU available at an output interface of the network; modifying (27) the MSS in the packet to be within the MTU size; and transmitting the data. This enables improved serviceability in IP networks by enabling MSS or MTU size in routers to be automatically adapted.
