A bioactive glass has a composition comprising 20-40 mol% CaO, 40-60 mol% SiO2 and 10-20 mol% MgO. The glass may also contain CaF2, Na2O, B2O3 and P2O5. The glass transition temperature of the bioactive glass is in the range 650-750{C and the difference in the glass transition temperature and its crystallisation temperature is 70-250{C. The bioactive glass may generate crystals of b -wollastonite and diopside. Also included is a sintered calcium phosphate glass comprising the bioactive glass as a sintering aid. The sintered calcium phosphate glass may contain hydroxyapatites, carbonated apatites or tricalcium phosphate.
