Flexible current transformer for partial discharge detection in cables

A current transformer 300 or a method of making the same comprises a conductive coil pattern 201 formed on a flexible insulating substrate 202, slits 203 are formed in the said insulating substrate 202 between parts of the conductive coil pattern 201 and a flexible core 301 is arranged to extend through the said slits 203. The flexible insulating substrate 202 may be in the form of a film. The flexible core 301 may be a cobalt-amorphous metal, a ferrite polymer composite or a non-magnetic plastic. The current transformer 300 may be mounted around one or more wires or cables or connector pins of a connector to detect high frequency signals relating to partial discharges in the range of 10 to 900 pico-Coulombs. A housing for mounting the transformer on one or more wires may be provided and a processor may analyze the electrical signals output from the current transformer.
