An onboard vehicle system 100 to determine vehicle engine exhaust gas emissions includes an emissions unit 10, a vehicle diagnostic system 20 (e.g. OBD or OBD II system) and one or more vehicle systems 60a, 60b... During calibration the emissions unit 10 is directly connected to, and receives data from, both the vehicle diagnostic system 20 and some of the vehicle systems 60a-c. The calculation of emissions may occur onboard in the emissions unit 10, or the data may be stored within the system and transmitted wirelessly via a communications interface 30 (e.g. mobile phone interface) to a remote station for processing. The emissions unit 10 may also be connected to a vehicle location unit 40 (e.g. GPS receiver) and position data used as an additional parameter in the calculation of emissions.
