PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing an alternative fuel for light oil wherein a valuable crude methyl ester is kept intact for sure and an only resulting crude glycerine is separated to recover even if such a waste food oil and fat as a recovery amount of glycerine varies every time is used as a starting material. PSOLUTION: A valve (32) for automatically opening and closing is provided and inserted at an intermediate height position of a separation path (P) directed downwardly from a reaction tank (A) to a separation tank (B). A sensor (S) for detecting a boundary surface between the crude methyl ester and the crude glycerine which are separated right after the ester exchange reaction is disposed at a position lower than that wherein the valve (32) for automatically opening and closing, which closes the separation path (P) in the meantime of still standing right after the ester exchange reaction, is made open for the first time after the still standing time. The valve (32) for automatically opening and closing receiving a detecting output signal from the sensor (S) for detecting a boundary surface closes the separation path (P) as soon as the sensor detects the boundary surface of two upper and lower layers flowing in the separation path (P).
