PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an alpha-sialon phosphor composed of a single crystal powder with a particle size of a few m, its manufacturing process, intermediate product, a material powder to be used for the manufacture and an LED lamp using the phosphor. PSOLUTION: The alpha-sialon phosphor is expressed by general formula: MSBx/SB(Si, Al)SB12/SB(O, N)SB16/SB(wherein, M represents at least one kind of element selected from the group consisting of Ca, Y, Mg, Li, Sc, Pr, Nd, Pm, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, Lu, and Sr; x is in the range of 0x2), has an alpha-sialon crystal structure as the main phase. At least one kind of the M's is the element which is solid-dissolved in the alpha-sialon crystal structure and constitutes the light emission center. The alpha-sialon phosphor emits visible light or near infrared light by being excited with ultraviolet light or blue light and a single crystal particle 1-30 m long in the longitudinal direction.
