PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a composite of calcium carbonate of the vaterite crystal system and starch which is used as a dye excellent in water resistance and color developability when it is used in a recording medium or a printed article, and to provide a recording medium comprising the composite.;SOLUTION: The composite of calcium carbonate of the vaterite crystal system and starch is obtained by a production method comprising synthesizing the calcium carbonate of the vaterite crystal system in water in which starch is dissolved, and preferably further adding succinic acid, calcium chloride and ammonium carbonate to the solution followed by agitation. The composite has a BET specific surface area of 5-500 m2/g, an average particle size of primary particles of 250 nm or less, and an average particle size of secondary particles of 3.0 μm or less. The recording medium comprises the composite of calcium carbonate of the vaterite crystal system and starch.
