PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a pressure-sensitive adhesive tape 3 for gradation coating as shown in Fig. that is excellent in workability and to provide a method for spray coating that can carry out a high-quality partial coating with a high efficiency at a low cost when the coated surface of an automobile is spot-repaired by partially spraying onto small damaged areas thereof.;SOLUTION: The coating method uses a pressure-sensitive adhesive tape formed by folding back a base tape one surface of which constitutes a pressure-sensitive adhesive surface as the whole to the side of the pressure-sensitive adhesive surface so as to wrap around a string (either side of the pressure-sensitive adhesive tape forming the outer skin part of the string in a semicircular form) and extending over the string to continuously self-bond together in a strip form with a part of the pressure-sensitive adhesive surface left at one end for sticking to the coated surface, and utilizes a clearance formed by the outer skin part of the string in a semicircular form, to thereby carry out gradation coating, so that the coating surface gradually becomes thinner with no stepped border.
