PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for manufacturing a liquid crystal optical modulator with a single substrate and a liquid crystal display device which is simple in a manufacturing method, and excellent in the stability or flexibility of display characteristics for suppressing the generation of impurity which easily results in the instability of the voltage operation of liquid crystal while securing the degree of freedom of structure design.;SOLUTION: An orientation film 2 is formed inside a single transparent substrate 1 so that a stripe-shaped electrode film and crystal 3 can be oriented, and an independent composite film 5 of molecule-oriented liquid crystal 3 and polymer 4 is formed on the orientation film 2, and an overcoat film 6 for preventing the leakage of liquid crystal is formed on the composite film 5. Also, two polarizers 8 whose polarization transparent axes are made orthogonal or parallel with each other are arranged outside the substrate 1 and the overcoat film 6. The overcoat film 6 is melted by solvent by which the polymer 5 of the composite film 5 is not melted, and formed through an application and drying processes by well-known various print methods.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2007,JPO&INPIT
