PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the production efficiency of a board by adequately noticing the work starting timing.;SOLUTION: The surface mounting apparatus for sucking a component from a component feeder and mounting it on a printed board has a controller 30 for regulating and controlling the operation of the surface mounting apparatus, an indicator 28 for noticing the starting timing of a retooling preparatory work, etc. The controller 30 comprises a production data memory 32 for storing time data of preparation works, a main controller 31 for controlling the indicator 28, etc. for noticing the starting timing of the preparatory work based on the time data, a clock counter 33 for measuring the work time of an operator based on the notice, and an arithmetic unit 34 for computing the average of its measured values over a specified number of samples.
