PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve desulfurization activity when a titania-alumina carrier is used for hydrogenating catalyst by baking the titania-alumina carrier with a specific range of TiO2/Al2O3 under specific conditions and enabling a scattering peak with specific wavenumbers to remain undetected in the Raman spectrum by Raman spectroscopy after baking. ;SOLUTION: In a hydrogenating catalyst which hydrogenates a hydrocarbon oil, the titania-alumina carrier is used which shows the weight ratio of TiO2/Al2 O3 within a range of 3/97-20/80 and besides shows that a peak is detected in neither of the wavenumbers of 140cm-1, 400cm-1, 520cm-1 and 640cm-1 attributed to the crystal structure of an anastase-type titania in the Raman spectrum using Raman spectroscopy after baking the carrier in the air at 900°C for one hour. A hydrate obtained by adding an aqueous mixed solution of inorganic titanate and inorganic aluminate to an aqueous solution of alkaline metal aluminate in the presence of hydroxycarboxylic acid so that the pH value is 6.5-9.5, is turned to a titania-alumina carrier using a routine means.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1998,JPO
