PURPOSE: To provide the new tribromoalkylsulfone derivative which is useful as an effective antifoggant in photothermographic elements, especially as a stabilizer in photothermographic materials containing silver to provide post- processing stability. ;CONSTITUTION: The objective compound is expressed by formula I (R¹-R³ are each H, halogen, alkyl, alkoxy, thioalkyl, cycloalkyl, perhalogenated alkyl, or together form an alicyclic group), e.g. the compound of the formula II ((n) is 2). The compound of formula I, e.g. a compound of formula II ((n) is 1-22) is obtained by reacting mercaptoacetic acid with a 1-bromoalkane to obtain a thioether acetate, and then, after brominating the resultant compound, oxidizing the brominated compound.
