PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To contrive the compatibility with a conventional font and thereby diminish a font memory capacity by interpreting whether a selected font is a substitutional font, and forming a character pattern using font data when it is not the substitutional font, and using font data and adjustment information when it is the substitutional font. SOLUTION: A font stored in ROM 3 as ROM for font loaded in a host computer 3000 is selected. Next, it is interpreted whether the selected font is a substitutional font, and when it is not the substitutional font, a character pattern is generated based on the selected font data. On the other hand, when it is the substitutional font, a character pattern is generated based on the selected font and adjustment information, and then a generated character pattern is output. Thus it is possible to diminish the memory capacity of the font, while contriving the compatibility with the conventional font.
