PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a large amount of phycobiliprotein and/or fatty acid which is useful in coloring food products, cosmetics ad the like or as a precursor of medicines by culturing a photosynthetic alga, for example, blue-green alga, red alga or crypt alga under irradiation with light in the magnetic field to produce phycobiliprotein and fatty acid. ;SOLUTION: A photosynthetic alga, for example, blue-green alga (spirulina), red alga (colarina) or cryptoalga is charged in a test tube and the tube is placed between the N- and S-poles of a magnet so that the both poles may oppose to each other on both sides of the tube. The test tube is irradiated with a fluorescent lamp with a illuminance of 800-8,000lux and the culture is continued at 24°C for 480 hours to produce phycobiliprotein (for example, phycocyanin) and/or fatty acid (γ-linolenic acid) whereby phycobiliprotein such as phycocyanin which is a blue protein used as a colorant for food product and cosmetics and a fatty acid such as γ-linolenic acid which is used as a cholesterol increase- inhibitor, a precursor of prostaglandin for treatment of atopic dermatitis.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1997,JPO
