PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain pattern matching method and device capable of improving the precision of recognition by using the variation of a feature vector. ;SOLUTION: A processing part 101 extracts the feature vectors of a reference pattern and a recognition pattern from respective buffers 104, 105 and extends/ reduces these patterns. Then the processing part 101 requests a distance management table inspection part 106 to extract the value of a just preceding vector and continuous application frequency and requests a distance calculating part 103 to calculate the changed distance of the feature vector based on the value of the just preceding feature vector and the continuous application frequency obtained by the inspection part 106 and the value of the current feature vector. The obtained distance value is stored in a sequential distance management table 102. When the changed distances of all feature vectors are stored, a distance between the reference pattern and the recognition pattern is calculated based on the stored distance.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1998,JPO
