ORIGINAL READER AND ORIGINAL READING METHOD

PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an original reader capable of correctly detecting the size of an original in a short time and scanning only correct original reading region even if the set original is somewhat deviated. PSOLUTION: When the original is scanned with a CCD sensor 109 without pre-scanning the original to read the surface of the original, the entire of an original platen glass surface 102 is photographed with an area sensor 300. Deviation amounts in a main scanning direction and a sub-scanning direction from the datum position of the original placed on the surface 102 are detected on the basis of the photographed image, and the size of the original is detected. Then, the image reading operation of the original by the CCD sensor 109 is performed so that the original is deviated by the detected deviation amount according to the size of the original.
