PURPOSE: To simply and safely obtain an aromatic thiol useful for applications of medicines, agrochemicals, functional materials, etc., from readily available raw materials in high yield by hydrolyzing a (hetero)aromatic halogenated methyl sulfide. ;CONSTITUTION: (A) A compound of the formula [Ar is a substituted (hetero) aromatic ring such as benzene ring substituted with a halogen, CN, formyl, amino, etc., substituted pyridine ring or a substituted (iso)thiazole ring; X is a halogen such as Cl; (m) is 1-3 and, especially 2 or 3; (n) is 1 or 2] is hydrolyzed in or without a solvent such as hexane or toluene in the presence of (B) an acid, e.g. hydrochloric or sulfuric acid and (C) a lower alcohol, e.g. methanol to afford the objective compound of the formula Ar-(SH)_n. Furthermore, the components (B) and (C) are used in respective amounts of about 0.01-1 and 0.5-10 times based on the component (A).
