PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a system and method for effectively measuring the polarization-dependent gain of an optical amplifier, without introducing large errors.;SOLUTION: A saturated optical signal source (110) generates optical signals capable of saturating an optical amplifier (1). Then, a low-speed saturation scrambler(150) polarizes the optical signals randomly, so as to generate the polarized optical signals. This polarized optical signal is used as the input signal of the optical amplifier (1). Then, the output signal of the optical amplifier (1) is transmitted to a high-speed polarization scrambler (120) to generate a PDG measuring signal. Then, this PDG measuring signal is transmitted to an optical signal analyzer (140) which measures the intensity level of each channel of the PDG-measuring signal. Alternatively, a wavelength division multiplex (WDM) polarization mixer (130) is used to reciprocally mix the polarization states of the WDM channels of the polarized optical signals from the low-speed polarization scrambler (150), and the input signal to the optical amplifier (1) to be measured is generated.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
