PURPOSE: To reduce the memory cost and to extend the color selection possibility of characters including a background, a foreground and a boundary while reducing or removing color defects by setting up the color attribute of a character to a level higher than the attribute level of a page. ;CONSTITUTION: A clamp circuit 6 clamps a composite video base band signal. An extraction circuit 8, a phase fixed loop 9 and a vertical synchronization separator 10 form respective clock pulses for a pixel, a line and a frame from the clamped signal in cooperation with each other. An address generator 11 divides an image area into rectangles corresponding to character positions by using these clocks. A RAM 12 includes the attributes of character levels and stores a text to be displayed. A luminance synchronizing circuit 15 generates a luminance signal Y corresponding to a character to be displayed by using a pixel code corresponding to the character to be displayed and read out from the ROM 13. A multiplex circuit 23 selects a character attribute from the RAM 12 or the color of a boundary or a background from a register 22 and sends the selected contents to a color logic circuit 14.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1995,JPO
