PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a deinterlacing apparatus and a method. PSOLUTION: The deinterlacing apparatus includes a motion detecting portion to extract the motion between a pre-field and a post-field of an input image, a film mode deciding portion to decide whether the input image is the film mode, an intra-field interpolation portion to calculate a first interpolation value, using the peripheral pixel values by a direction value included in the pixel value of the pixel periphery written by the present field, an inter-field interpolating portion to calculate a second interpolation value, using the pixel values of the pre-field and the post-field, corresponding to the pixels written by the present field; and a mixing portion for detecting judder by a plurality of lines extracted by the present field and a line extracted by the field written at the inter-field interpolating portion, and to selectively output the output value of the inter-field interpolating portion and the output value of the intra-field interpolating portion by the detectability.
