PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a practical technology for enabling thickness reduction of an FPD.;SOLUTION: An electrode 11 is formed on one of a pair of glass substrates 1 and the glass substrates 1 are stuck together via a sealing material 12. The thickness thereof is reduced by mechanically polishing the outside surfaces of the glass substrates 1 after end sealing of the interior. While the substrate 1 is moved relatively mechanically with a nozzle 4, an eluate L composed of hydrofluoric acid is injected from the nozzle 4 toward the outside surface of the glass substrate 1 and is sprayed to the outside surface by pressure within a range from 0.5 to 3.5 kg/cm2 under the acceleration greater than the acceleration by its own weight.
