The module is designed to be secured to the outside of a building and comprises a sensor for monitoring a curtain-shaped security zone corresponding to an area of the building such as a door or window, a controller (90) with an input for receiving a signal from the sensor, a loudspeaker (22) and an audio memory (21) with a pre-programmed message stored on it. If the sensor detects a person entering the security zone then it sends a signal to the controller so that the message is played back over the loudspeaker. An independent claim is also included for a building monitoring method using this module, in which video pictures are recorded from the security zone in the event of a possible intruder being detected and then sent to a central monitoring centre if the possible intruder does not leave the zone after the message has been played back.
