Various non-limiting embodiments set forth herein generally relate to photochromic compounds which may be thermally reversible or non-thermally reversible, and to articles produced therefrom. Other non-limiting embodiments relate to dichroic photochromic compounds which may be thermally reversible or non-thermally reversible, and articles prepared therefrom. For example, a non-limiting embodiment provides a thermally reversible photochromic compound adapted to have at least a first state and a second state, wherein the thermally reversible photochromic compound has an average absorption ratio of greater than 2,3 in at least a state as determined according to the Cell Method. Another non-limiting embodiment provides a photochromic compound comprising: (a) at least one photochromic group selected from a pyran, an oxazine, and a fulgent; and (b) at least one stretching agent L attached to at least one photochromic group and represented by the formula - ¢ S ~ 1 ~! c ~ - ¢ Q ~ 1 ~ - ¢ S ~ 2 ~! ~ d ~! d 39 ~ - ¢ Q ~ 2 ~ - ¢ S ~ 3 ~! ~ e ~! ~ e 39 ~ - ¢ Q ~ 3 ~ - ¢ S ~ 4 ~! ~ f ~! ~ f ~ -S ~ 5 ~ -P, which is described in this context.
