These are methods and systems that are provided for separating data from a structured document from the markup structure applied to the document and for linking the data held separately to the associated markup structure applied to the document. The data stream in a document represented by Extensible Markup Language (XML) is moved out of the document structure to a data file that is bound to the document structure. The data file and document structure represented by XML are kept in association with a single file (for example, document), but in separate object models. Bindings are established between XML elements applied to the document and data file data ranges. Each of the XML structure file and data file can be accessed and edited separately without affecting the structure or data of the other file until the two files are merged for presentation of the associated document.
