Crude tall oil recovered from pulping of pine wood with a known harvest time is refined by feeding crude tall oil into a column distiller, where it is separated into desired fractions, and at least part of which are recovered as a product flow. An independent claim is also included for a device for measurement of the density of liquid flows to measure the density of the feed and product flows of crude tall oil distilleries and reproducibly determine the density of the liquid flow of tall oil or its fraction, to an accuracy of =4 decimal places or, correspondingly, 5 significant figures.
