There is provided a sign language interpretation system and a sign language interpretation method capable of coping with even an urgent case without requiring discussion in advance between a deaf mute, a non-deaf mute person, and a sign language interpreter to make reservation for an MCU. The sign language interpretation system (100) has a function for connecting a deaf mute terminal (300), a non-deaf mute person terminal (310), and a sign language interpreter terminal (320) and a function for combining the audio/video signals received from the respective terminals and transmitting the combined result to the respective terminals, thereby providing a service for video telephone conversation between a deaf mute and a non-deaf mute person via a sign language interpreter. A control device (180) includes a sign language interpreter registration table (182) having flags indicating the sign language interpreter selection information, a terminal number, and an acceptance enabled/disabled state. When called by a deaf mute or a non-deaf mute person, a sign language interpreter in the acceptance enabled state and satisfying the selection condition specified by the caller is selected. This sign language interpreter terminal and the call destination terminal are called so as to be automatically connected. Moreover, the system has a function for registering words difficult to explain during a conversation and displaying them as a telop.
