The system (85) has three slits (113, 134, 143) installed in front of three prisms (114, 135, 142) respectively. The slits are placed so that widths can be controlled in a direction in which light is separated by two dichroic filters (109, 112) according to color. Light with Gaussian distribution is incident upon each slit and edge portions of the Gaussian distribution are removed by each slit. Independent claims are also included for the following: (A) a projection system (B) a method of forming a color image on a light valve by separating light emitted from a light source into color beams via a color separator and by scrolling the color beams via a scrolling unit.
