A liquid such as water is sprayed onto the ballast in the region of the outlet for the ballast in the train wagon (1) in order to reduce the amount of dust released into the atmosphere. The water exits via one or more openings to form at least one jet directed against the ballast being unloaded. Ballast is unloaded by gravity via an outlet in the bottom of the train wagon as the latter is moving along the track. An independent claim is also included for the ballast unloading system, comprising railway wagons for dropping the ballast onto the track, a liquid reservoir (2), nozzles for forming the jets of liquid, pipes, a hydraulic or pneumatic pump, a control unit, a sensor and at least one valve optionally operated by the control unit.
