The method involves providing an image data set from a prepress stage. A mark is integrated into the image data set. A region or an extract of the image data set is determined by scanning the mark, where the region comprises the image data relevant to the determination of zonal area coverage values. The zonal area coverage values for a print are determined from the region or the extract. A presetting value for inking zone setting units are determined from the zonal area coverage values. An independent claim is also included for an apparatus for determining a presetting value of inking zone setting unit of an inking unit that is utilized for a printing press.
