The invention relates to a main drive system for chuck plate in boring and turning mills, used for turning and milling operations carried out with the lathe. According to the invention, the system comprises a drive group for turning (A), consisting of a variable speed electrical motor (1), a two-step gearbox, and a toothed belt gearing (5) which transmits the motion by means of a group (C) to the crown gear (7) of a chuck plate (8) in boring and turning mill, of a group (B) driving the chuck plate (8) in a slow feeding motion for milling, comprising an electric motor (9), a planetary reduction gear box (10) with reduced angular play, a toothed pulley (11) towards an intermediary shaft (14), in connection with a sleeve (3), by means of an electromagnetic coupling (15), from which the motion is transmitted to the chuck plate (8) of the boring and turning mill by means of the same toothed belt gearing (5) and by means of the same group (C) taking over the play, comprising two pinions (16 and 17) coaxially located and both engaged with the crown gear (7), that is of the inclined toothed gear-type, wherefrom the pinion (17) is movable and coupled with the first pinion by some channels (b), the axial displacement of the pinion (17) being made by some hydraulic pinions (22), located in some seats (f) of the pinion (16) with fixed axial position and fed with pressurized oil by means of radial channels (h) and a central channel (i) from a rotary connection (23).
