PROCESS FOR THE SYNTHESIS OF (7-METHOXY-1-NAPHTHYL)ACETONITRILE AND ITS APPLICATION IN THE SYNTHESIS OF AGOMELATINIE

2-(7-Methoxy-1-naphthyl)acetonitrile (I) is produced by contacting 2-(7-methoxy-3,4-dihydro-1-naphthyl)acetonitrile (II) with a hydrogenation catalyst in the presence of an allylic compound. 2-(7-Methoxy-1-naphthyl)acetonitrile of formula (I) is produced by contacting 2-(7-methoxy-3,4-dihydro-1-naphthyl)acetonitrile of formula (II) with a hydrogenation catalyst in the presence of an allylic compound. An independent claim is also included for production of agomelatine, comprising producing (I) as above followed by reduction and reaction with acetic anhydride. [Image].
