The device comprises an upper plate (1) and a lower plate (2) separated by an intermediate membrane which allows the upper plate to move relative to the lower plate. A first sample object whose friction coefficient is being measured is secured on top of the upper plate and a suitably shaped second sample object is dragged across the surface of the first object by hand. An upper sensor connected to the upper plate continuously records the normal forces encountered and a lower sensor connected to the lower plate continuously records the resulting friction between the two objects.
