The engine operates on the jet-controlled principle and has at least one inlet and exhaust channel, an injection device (1) and a laser ignition device (2) per cylinder (10) whose laser beam passes through an inlet window (7) and is focused on an ignition point (6) within the injection beam cone. The axis (1') of the injection device is approximately parallel to the cylinder axis (10') and encloses an angle of 0 to 5 degrees with the cylinder axis. At least one inlet channel is arranged and designed to establish a tumbling and/or twisting flow that feeds cylinder gas with little or no fuel to the inlet window.
