The invention relates to methods for treating insulin resistance in mammals comprising administering an effective amount of a compound of formula (I) in which the variables are defined in the specification, or of the stereoisomeric mixtures or the enriched stereoisomers, the diastomerically pure, enantiomerically enriched or enantiomerically pure isomers, or pharmaceutically acceptable salts and averages thereof for said mammals. The compounds of formula (I) are growth hormone secretagogues and as such are useful for increasing the level of endogenous growth hormone. In other aspects this invention provides certain intermediates that are useful in the synthesis of the above compounds and some methods useful for the synthesis of said intermediate compounds and the compounds of formula (I). Said invention further relates to methods comprising administering to a man or another animal a combination of a functional somatostatin antagonist such as an alpha-2-adrenergic fighter and a compound of the general formula (I).
