ORGANIC PEROXIDE STABILIZATION WITH .BETA.-DICARBONYL OR CYCLIC .ALPHA.-DIKETONE COMPOUNDS

Organic peroxide compositions which contain a .beta.-dicarbonyl compound or a cyclic a-diketone compound asstabilizer to retard the rate of decomposition of the peroxidecompound are disclosed. The stabilizer selected from theformulas (I), (II), (III), (IV)R5-C (O) -CHR6-C (O) -R7 (III)and mixtures thereof, wherein m is 1-5, n is 1-6, i is 0-1, xis 0-2n, y is 0-2m, R1 is alkyl containing 1 to 22 carbonatoms, phenyl, or phenyl substituted with one or more of alkylcontaining 1 to 22 carbon atoms, halogen, and hydroxy, and R1can be hydrogen where i is zero, R2 is alkyl containing 1 to 22carbon atoms, phenyl, or phenyl substituted with one or moreof alkyl containing 1 to 22 carbon atoms, halogen, andhydroxy, and when x is greater than 1, each occurrence of R2can be the same or different and can be on the same ordifferent ring carbon atoms, R3 is hydrogen, alkyl containing 1to 22 carbon atoms, acyl containing 2 to 22 carbon atoms,phenyl, or phenyl substituted with one or more of alkylcontaining 1 to 22 carbon atoms, halogen, and hydroxy; R4 isalkyl containing 1 to 22 carbon atoms, phenyl, or phenylsubstituted with one or more of alkyl containing 1 to 22carbon atoms, halogen, and hydroxy; and when y is greater than1, each occurrence of R4 can be the same or different and canbe on the same or different ring carbon atoms; R5 is hydrogen,alkyl containing 1 to 22 carbon atoms, phenyl, or phenylsubstituted with one or more of alkyl containing 1 to 22carbon atoms, halogen, or hydroxy; R6 is hydrogen or alkylcontaining 1 to 22 carbon atoms, phenyl, or phenyl substitutedwith one or more of alkyl containing 1 to 22 carbon atoms,halogen, or hydroxy; or R6 can be -C (O) OR8 or -C (O) R8 wherein R8is alkyl containing 1 to 22 carbon atoms; and R7 is phenyl oralkyl containing 1 to 22 carbon atoms.
