The invention relates to L-arginine derivatives of general formula (I), a process for their preparation and pharmaceutical compositions containing them. The compound of the invention exhibits biological activity as inhibitors of NO synthase. In the formula, A represents a hydrogen atom, a lower alkyl group or the nitro radical, E represents an oxygen atom or a covalent bond, n is zero or an integer from 1 to 12, and either R1 and R2 independently represent a linear or branched alkyl chain, or R1 and R2 together with the nitrogen atom to which they are attached, a 5- or 6-membered saturated or unsaturated ring of formula (a), in which X represents a hydrogen, sulfur or nitrogen atom, the imino, alkylimino or methylene radical.
