Pulse propagation analysis to ascertain whether an anomalysuch as surface corrosion exists on a section of conductivemember (22) such as pipe. Anomalies such as surface corrosionresult in localized velocity chances of pulses propagating alonga conductive member. These localized velocity changes exhibitthemselves in changes in waveform, rise and fall time, amplitudeand time delay of a pulse with respect to a fixed timereference. To allow such anomalies to be located, two pulsesare generated (28, 30) such that they intersect at intersectinglocations along the conductive member. The resulting modifiedpulses are analyzed (24) for perturbations indicative oflocalized velocity changes.
