ENERGY METER WITH POWER QUALITY MONITORING AND DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEMS

An electronic meter (10) which automaticallydetects the service type and voltage to which the meter(10) is installed and which either automaticallycontinues its own programming to the detected serviceis disclosed. An electronic energy meter (10) thatpermits the addition of new measurements or testingcapabilities without requiring factory modifications toeffect such functionality changes is also disclosed. Themeter (10) includes firmware which measures thecharacteristics of electrical energy supplied to themeter and which generates characteristic signalsreflective of the measured characteirstics of theelectrical energy. A processor (16) is connected toreceive and process the characteristic signals. Theprocessing of the characteristic signals includesselecting and manipulating certain of the characteristicsignals and generating characteristic information inresponse to the selection and generating additionalcharacteristic information in response to themanipulation. It is preferred for the meter (10) toinclude a memory (35) having reference informationstored therein. In such an embodiment, themanipulation of characteristic signals includesretrieving certain of the reference information andgenerating the characteristic information in responseto the selected signals and the reference information.
