A process for phosphorylating primary fatty alcohols, secondary alcohols, oraromatic alcohols comprising the following steps: (a)forming an intimate mixture of one or more of the above alcohols and P4O10 orpartly hydrated P4O10 or a mixture thereof at a temperaturebelow 80°C; and (b) allowing the intimate mixture to continue to reactfor a period of time at a temperature below 80°C until the formationof the dihydrogen form of the phosphorylated alcohol is substantially formed.
