SYSTEM AND METHOD FOR LARGE SCALE INFORMATION ANALYSIS USING DATA VISUALIZATION TECHNIQUES

A system and method for processing a stored original data set for subsequentdisplay on auser interface of a computer, the original data set having multiple dimensionsand a number oforiginal data points greater than the number of pixels available on the userinterface fordisplaying a representative pixel value for the data value of each of theoriginal data points. Thesystem comprises a data reduction module for reducing the original data set toproduce a reduceddata set having a number of reduced data points less than the number oforiginal data points. Thenumber of reduced data points is based on a received query parameter includingat least one ofavailable memory of the computer, a range of a continuous dimension of themultipledimensions, and a level of detail for at least one dimension other than thecontinuous dimension.The system includes a data resizing module for dynamically resizing thereceived reduced dataset to produce a resized data set suitable for use in generating a display ofpixels appropriate tothe number of available pixels. The data resizing module is configured forsumming orotherwise combining the individual data values of selected adjacent ones ofthe reduced datapoints in the reduced data set and assigning the combined value to arespective data value of aresized data point in the resized data set. The system also has a pixel moduleconfigured forusing a predefined colour scale for assigning a unique colour as therepresentative pixel value ofthe respective data value of a resized data point included in the display ofpixels, such that thecolour scale is configured for defining a plurality of the unique colours todifferent data values ofthe individual resized data points.
