A method, apparatus, and system for remotely monitoring (20) a liquid level ina tank (12) are provided by broadcasting a signal indicative (16) of theliquid level in the tank (12) directly to a cellular communication network(18) from a stand-alone liquid level monitor (14) operatively attached to thetank. The stand-alone monitor is battery powered and includes a processorconfigured for conserving power by operating the monitor according to aperiodic sampling and broadcast schedule, which may be modified by signalsreceived at the monitor directly from the cellular communications network.
