Methods are provided for determining the malignancy of cells in a bladder carcinoma sample. Expression patterns of Na,K-ATPase a and ß subunits are shown to be associated with recurrence risk in these cancers. Detection of Na,K-ATPase a and ß subunits expression in bladder carcinomas provides a useful diagnostic for predicting patient prognosis and probability of drug effectiveness. Na,K-ATPase a and ß subunits provide a target for drug screening.
