Disclosed is a material for shadow masks which is excellent in tensile strength and magnetic characteristics. Also disclosed are a method for producing such a material for shadow masks, a shadow mask made of such a material for shadow masks, and a color picture tube having such a shadow mask. Specifically disclosed is a material for shadow masks containing not more than 0.003 weight% of C, not more than 0.05 weight% of Si, 0.1-0.5 weight% of Mn, not more than 0.1 weight% of P, not more than 0.05 weight% of S, not more than 0.02 weight% of Al, 0.001-0.01 weight% of N, not more than 0.01 weight% of B, and further containing 0.01-0.07 weight% of Ti and/or 0.01-0.05 weight% of Nb, and the balance of Fe and unavoidable impurities.
