The invention relates to a multi-stage piston vacuum pump and a method for operating the same. The pump consists of a housing (1) and at least two pump chambers (2) and (4). Between the suction side (16) and the pump chambers and between the pump chambers themselves, there is a system of connecting pipes and valves through which the individual pumps can be operated either in parallel or in series. The connecting lines and valves are integrated in the pump housing, so that a compact and space-saving design is achieved. The length of the connecting lines themselves can be reduced to a minimum.
