The invention relates to indole and indoline based hybrid dyes and indole and indoline based hybrid dye intermediate products having a structure (I): X - S - Y; wherein X represents a group which is derived from a derivative of indole or indoline as a precursor of melanin; Y represents a group which is derived from an oxidation dye based intermediate product of a coupler or developer variety, or a derivative of indole or indoline as a precursor of melanin; and S represents a structural element which is a common component of groups X and Y, a direct bond or at least one spacer group. The inventive products are particularly suitable for dyeing keratin fibres, particularly human hair.
